It surprises most riders, but reports have consistently shown that a large share of motorcycle thefts happen at or near the owner's home — driveways, carports, apartment parking lots, even inside garages. Your bike spends far more hours parked at home than anywhere else, and thieves who spot a nice bike in public will sometimes simply follow it home, where they can work at 3 a.m. with no witnesses.
Public thefts absolutely happen too — bar parking lots, event venues, and street parking are classic hunting grounds — but the "it's safe because it's home" assumption is exactly what thieves count on.
What actually helps at home:
- Park out of sight from the street, or keep it covered so nobody window-shops your driveway
- Anchor it — chain through the frame to something fixed, not just through a wheel
- Motion-sensing lights and a camera aimed at the parking spot
- A tracker with movement alerts, so your phone wakes you the moment the bike shifts
Layer those and a nighttime driveway theft goes from a two-minute job to a loud, lit, tracked problem the thief doesn't want.
