But a monthly fee is not a given. A newer generation of trackers builds the connectivity cost into the purchase price, so you pay once and that's it. When you're comparing options, check three things before you buy:
- Subscription terms — is the advertised price the real long-term price?
- What happens if you stop paying — most subscription trackers become useless bricks.
- App access — some brands lock basic features like movement alerts behind higher-tier plans.
