Partially — and the distinction matters. A GPS tracker does two separate jobs: knowing where it is, and telling you. Cell service only affects the second one.
GPS positioning comes from satellites and works essentially anywhere outdoors on Earth — no cell towers required. So in a dead zone, your tracker still knows exactly where it is. What it can't do is transmit that position to your phone, because the report travels over the cellular network.
What this means in practice:
- In a dead zone, updates pause. The app shows the last reported position, not a live one.
- Coverage returns, reporting resumes. The tracker reconnects automatically the moment it finds signal, and many units log positions while offline and send them once back in coverage — so you can see where the bike traveled.
- Real-world theft favors you here. Stolen bikes overwhelmingly move through populated areas — streets, highways, storage yards — which is exactly where cellular coverage lives. A thief riding into deep wilderness to escape your tracker is not a realistic scenario.
Also worth knowing: your phone doesn't need to be anywhere near the bike. As long as the tracker has coverage wherever it is, you can watch it from across the country. For the rare full off-grid use case, satellite communicators exist — but for theft protection, cellular GPS is the right tool.
