A hitch lock stops the opportunist — the guy cruising a lot looking for a trailer he can back up to and drive off with in ninety seconds. That alone makes it worth the $30. But be honest about its limits: a determined thief with a battery grinder or a heavy pry bar can defeat most hitch locks in a few minutes, and some cheap ones pop open with a hammer blow.
What actually works is stacking layers so your trailer is never the easy one on the block:
A hardened coupler lock plus a receiver hitch lock, so there are two separate attacks required
A wheel lock or chock lock — a trailer that can't roll is a miserable target
Parking it tongue-in, against a wall or behind a vehicle, so it can't just be hooked and pulled
The last layer is the one nobody sees: a hidden tracker on the frame. Locks only work while the thief is standing there; if he wins that round, a tracker with motion alerts tells you the moment the trailer moves and shows police exactly where it went. Recovery is the layer locks can't give you.
