A sore passenger ends the ride long before your fuel tank does. And pillion seats are usually the worst perch on the bike — thin foam, more vibration over the rear wheel, nothing to brace against. Here's what keeps a passenger genuinely comfortable:
Set suspension preload for two-up weight. A wallowing rear end makes every bump land harder on the person sitting directly over it. Your manual has the setting; it takes five minutes.
Give them something to lean on. A backrest or top-box pad transforms pillion comfort more than anything else on the chassis.
Shorten the stop interval. Solo you might do 90 minutes; two-up, stop every 45–60. Passengers can't stand on pegs or shift around the way riders can, so pressure builds faster for them.
Cushion their seat too. The same physics that hammers your sit bones hits theirs harder on thinner foam. An air-cell cushion strapped to the pillion spreads their weight and takes the sting out of the bumps they can't see coming.
Ride smoother than you would alone — early braking, gentle rolls on the throttle. Every jerk is a neck and back load they can't anticipate.
Do these and the "are we there yet" taps on your shoulder mostly disappear.
