Two-up changes the physics of the whole bike, and your lower back feels it first. The extra weight squats the rear suspension, tips your pelvis, and every passenger wobble becomes a load your core has to catch. Here's how to keep it comfortable for both of you:
Set preload for the combined weight. This is step one, not optional. Correct sag restores the bike's geometry so you're not fighting a chopper-raked front end and a mushy rear all day.
Brief your passenger. Lean with the bike, hold the grab rails or your hips (not your shoulders), no sudden shifts. Unpredictable weight is what tweaks a rider's back mid-corner.
Brake and accelerate earlier and softer. Every abrupt input becomes a helmet-clack and a spinal jolt for two.
Shorten stop intervals to 45–60 minutes. Two people fatigue faster than one, and passengers can't move around to relieve pressure.
Fix both contact points. Extra load means more pressure through your sit bones and more transmitted bumps. An air-cell cushion on the rider's seat — and the pillion, if your passenger is a regular — spreads that pressure and absorbs the hits the loaded suspension no longer soaks up.
Two-up done right is one of riding's great pleasures. Set the bike up for it and your back stays out of the conversation.
