Trailer theft is brutally efficient: a thief doesn't need to start your bike, defeat your disc lock, or even touch the motorcycle. They back up, drop your trailer onto their hitch, and drive off with everything. So trailer security is about making the trailer itself impossible to tow away quickly.
Work through these layers:
- Coupler/hitch lock: a hardened lock that fills the coupler so it can't drop onto a ball. This is the bare minimum — and cheap ones pop off with a screwdriver, so buy quality.
- Wheel clamp: a boot-style clamp on at least one trailer wheel stops a roll-away or drag-away.
- Chain to an anchor: when parked at home, chain the trailer frame to a ground anchor or solid post.
- Lock the bike to the trailer: chain the frame to the trailer's tie-down points so the bike can't be lifted off separately.
- Remove a wheel or tongue if storing long-term: a trailer that can't roll is a miserable target.
Finally, hide a GPS tracker on the trailer or the bike. Trailers vanish into storage yards and back lots fast; a live location on your phone, plus a movement alert the moment it rolls, is the difference between a police report and a recovery.
