A security setup you never test is a setup you're trusting on faith. A good rhythm for most riders:
Monthly (5 minutes): Work every lock — disc lock, chain, ignition — so they don't seize up; a lock that sticks when you're in a hurry is a lock you'll stop using. Open your tracker app and confirm the bike's location is reporting and accurate. Trigger your alarm or motion alert on purpose: rock the bike and make sure your phone actually buzzes.
Seasonally: Check batteries — alarm remote, and the tracker's battery level in the app (a replaceable battery typically runs many months, but you want to swap it on your schedule, not discover it dead after a theft). Inspect chains and anchors for rust or grinding damage, and re-lube lock cylinders.
After any change: New apartment, new parking spot, new phone? Re-test everything that night — camera angles, alert notifications, app logins.
The most common failure isn't a defeated lock; it's a dead battery, a silenced notification, or an app that got logged out during a phone update. Sixty seconds of shaking your own bike once a month tells you the whole stack still works — and that's what lets you actually relax when it's parked.
