First rule: don't rush outside. Most night noises are wind, animals, or a neighbor's cat — but on the off chance it's a person, you never want to meet them in the dark over property. Nothing in your garage is worth that.
Here's the safe sequence:
- Look before you act. Check from a window or your camera app if you have one. Turn on exterior lights from inside — light alone sends most prowlers walking.
- If you see someone, stay inside and call the police. Give them a description and let them do their job. Never confront; describe.
- If you see nothing, leave the full inspection for daylight. In the morning, check the garage door, side door, and windows for pry marks, and check your bike for a shifted cover or tampered locks.
Then use the scare as fuel. Motion-activated lights, a camera on the garage approach, and reinforced door hardware handle the building. For the bike itself, a motion-alert GPS tracker hidden on the frame turns "was that a noise?" into a definitive answer — if the bike gets touched, your phone tells you instantly, and if it's ever taken, you hand police a live location. You should never have to interpret sounds through a wall at 2am again.
