Usually not. Standard homeowners and renters policies almost always exclude motor vehicles that require registration — and that includes your motorcycle, even when it's stolen from inside your own garage. It's one of the more painful surprises riders discover after a theft.
What theft coverage actually looks like:
- Comprehensive coverage on a motorcycle policy is what pays out for theft. Liability-only insurance — what many riders carry to save money — pays nothing if the bike disappears.
- Home insurance may still help with the building: a smashed garage door or forced side door from the break-in is typically covered under your homeowners policy, minus your deductible.
- Riding gear stored in the garage — helmets, jackets, tools — may fall under home contents coverage, subject to limits.
Policies vary by state and insurer, so read yours or call and ask the theft question directly. If your bike matters to you, comprehensive coverage plus layered security — lock, anchor, tracker — is the honest answer, because insurance replaces money, not your actual bike.
