Honestly? A motel lot is one of the riskier places your bike sleeps — and thieves know touring bikes carry luggage and out-of-state plates, meaning the owner is asleep, unfamiliar with the area, and gone by morning. Lots near interstates get cruised for exactly that. But riders cross the country every day without losing bikes, and the difference is almost always a few deliberate habits, not luck.
Stack the odds your way:
- Ask for a ground-floor room and park directly outside your window, under a light or camera
- Use a disc lock at minimum; loop a cable or chain to something fixed, or to another bike
- Cover the bike — an anonymous shape gets skipped for the easy target two rows over
- Take your GPS, bags, and anything valuable into the room
- Set motion alerts on a hidden tracker so your phone wakes you if the bike moves at 3 a.m.
That last layer is what turns motel anxiety into actual sleep: instead of wondering, you know the bike hasn't moved — and if it ever does, you're calling 911 with a live location instead of discovering an empty spot at checkout. Don't go outside to confront anyone; let police do the intercepting.
