It depends on one honest calculation: what would insurance actually pay, versus what you're paying for it. Comprehensive coverage on a stolen bike pays actual cash value minus your deductible — and on an older motorcycle, ACV can be humbling.
Run the numbers like this:
Look up your bike's real market value (what similar ones actually sell for).
Subtract your deductible — that's your realistic payout.
Compare it to the annual comprehensive premium. If you're paying $150 a year to protect a potential $1,200 payout, you're spending more than 10% of the benefit annually. Many riders reasonably self-insure at that point.
Two important exceptions:
Vintage and collectible bikes: a standard ACV policy may drastically undervalue them. An agreed-value classic bike policy — where you lock in the number up front — is usually the right tool.
You can't absorb the loss: if losing the bike means losing your transportation and you can't replace it from savings, cheap coverage still buys real peace of mind.
If you do drop theft coverage, redirect some of that premium into prevention — a solid lock and a hidden tracker — because you've just become your own insurance company.
