Worth being aware, not worried — there's a difference. Motorcycle theft is real (tens of thousands of bikes are reported stolen in the US every year), but the risk is very unevenly spread, and a rider with basic layers in place is a far harder target than the statistics suggest.
A quick honest read on your local risk:
- Location: urban areas and warm-weather states consistently top the theft reports. Dense apartment parking is riskier than a quiet driveway.
- Bike: NICB data has shown common Japanese brands — Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki — topping most-stolen lists, largely because there are so many of them and parts move easily.
- Parking: the single biggest factor you control. A bike left uncovered and unlocked on the street is a different risk universe than one covered, chained, and tracked.
Check your city's crime map or ask local riders what they've seen — then act on what you find. If you're in a hotter area, don't let it steal your sleep; let it set your setup. Cover, lock to something solid, and hide a motion-alert GPS tracker on the frame so you'd know the second anything happens and could hand police a live location. Same bike, same zip code — completely different odds.
