Layered security just means no single failure loses the bike. Here's a checklist worth pinning to the garage wall:
Layer 1 — Don't get picked: Park in sight or behind a locked door; use a plain cover (anonymous bikes get skipped); motion-sensing light on the parking spot; never leave keys or fobs near the bike.
Layer 2 — Don't get moved: Steering lock every stop; disc lock with a reminder cable; heavy chain through the frame — not just a wheel — to a ground anchor or immovable object at home.
Layer 3 — Don't get taken quietly: Audible alarm or motion alert to your phone; camera covering the bike; at events, chain bikes together with your group.
Layer 4 — Don't stay lost: A hidden GPS tracker so a stolen bike reports its own location; VIN, plate, and photos saved in your phone for an instant police report; theft coverage on your insurance.
Layers 1-3 defeat the opportunist and slow down the pro. Layer 4 is the one that matters after everything else fails — police with a live location in the first hours is what recovery realistically looks like. Run down this list once and you've covered more than the vast majority of bikes parked next to yours.
