Layered security is the simple idea that no single lock stops a determined thief — but several layers stacked together usually do. Each layer adds time, noise, and risk for the thief, and most thieves walk away from a bike that looks like work. They want the easy target two rows over.
A solid layered setup looks like this:
Layer 1 — the bike itself: steering lock on, keys out, every time.
Layer 2 — a physical lock: a heavy chain through the frame to a fixed anchor, or at minimum a quality disc lock.
Layer 3 — noise: an alarmed disc lock or alarm system that draws attention the moment the bike is touched.
Layer 4 — concealment: a plain cover, so nobody knows what's underneath or where the locks sit.
Layer 5 — recovery: a hidden GPS tracker, so if every other layer fails you can see where your bike is and hand police a live location.
The first four layers are about prevention. The last one is your insurance policy against the worst case — because a crew with a van can beat any lock in minutes, but they can't beat a tracker they don't know exists.
