After 50, the difference between a good riding day and a stiff one is often decided before the engine starts. Nothing about this routine is complicated — it's about giving a seasoned body the warm-up it's earned. Fifteen minutes, most of it while your coffee cools:
Move first (5 minutes). A short walk — around the block, around the garage. Warm muscles stretch better and joints move easier. Never stretch cold.
Open the riding muscles (5 minutes). Hip flexor lunge 30 seconds per side, hamstrings 30 per side, 8 slow cat-cows, 10 gentle torso twists, 10 shoulder rolls. Hips and hamstrings shape your posture on the bike; everything else follows them.
Hydrate before you're thirsty. A full glass of water before you gear up. Muscle fatigue and cramping show up faster when you start a ride already low.
Gear check with intent: earplugs in, layers right for the first hour, anything you'll want reachable at stops actually reachable.
Ride the first 20 minutes easy. Consider it part of the warm-up — smooth inputs, relaxed grip, settle into a tall neutral posture before the miles pile on.
One honest note: a warm-up helps the muscles, but it can't change how a stock seat concentrates pressure on two points for hours. Pair the routine with a seat that spreads the load and the whole system works. (Comfort advice, not medical advice — clear anything new with your doctor if you have back or joint conditions.)
