Good news: seat comfort is one place where money doesn't decide the outcome. A custom seat runs hundreds; most of the benefit is available for a fraction of that — or free. In order of cost:
Free: change how you sit. Shift position every 10–15 minutes, stand on the pegs over rough stuff, and stop for five minutes every hour before anything hurts. This alone extends most riders' comfortable window noticeably.
Free: check your setup. Handlebar and lever position, tire pressure, suspension preload for your weight. A rear end that's too soft slams every bump straight into your spine.
Under $10: padded cycling underwear or a folded towel test. Crude, but a folded towel under your sit bones for one ride tells you cheaply whether pressure is your real problem. (It usually is.)
$34.95: an air-cell seat cushion. This is the price-to-payoff sweet spot. Interconnected air cells spread your weight across the whole seat instead of two pressure points, and they absorb the constant small hits before your spine does. It straps onto the seat you already own in two minutes — no upholstery work, no new seat pan, and it moves to your next bike.
The honest ranking: posture and breaks are free and real, but they manage the problem. Changing the contact point is what shrinks it — and $34.95 is about as cheap as a structural fix gets.
