Theft season tracks riding season. Reports from the NICB and insurers have consistently shown motorcycle thefts peaking in the warm months — roughly June through September, with late summer usually the worst stretch. It makes sense: more bikes are out of the garage, parked at work, at bars, at trailheads, and thieves know exactly when the inventory hits the streets. The slowest months are typically December through February, when most bikes are tucked away.
The practical takeaway: the months you ride the most are the months your bike is most likely to disappear, so don't let summer laziness undo your security habits. A few things that matter most in peak season:
- Lock the bike every single stop, even a five-minute coffee run
- Park where you (or a camera) can see it
- Keep a cover on it overnight — anonymous bikes get skipped
And because summer is also when a stolen bike vanishes into a van in under a minute, a hidden tracker with motion alerts is the one layer that keeps working after the lock fails. Deterrence for the opportunist, live location for the police if a pro shows up.
