A few unglamorous reasons — and one that's actually legitimate.
Cost. The seat is a line item, and firm single-density foam is cheap, easy to shape, and durable. Multi-density foam engineered for long-ride comfort costs real money, which is why it mostly shows up on touring flagships and in the aftermarket.
Styling. Thin, sculpted seats make a bike look fast and low in the showroom. Nobody sits on the showroom floor for three hours.
Durability optics. Firm foam holds its shape for years, so the seat still looks good at trade-in — even if it never felt good past mile 90.
And the legitimate one: ultra-soft isn't actually the goal. A pillow-soft seat lets you sink until you bottom out against the hard pan underneath, your sit bones end up loaded anyway, and the mushy platform makes you squirm and fatigue faster. Some firmness gives support. The real problem isn't firmness itself — it's concentration: firm, flat foam parks most of your weight on two small sit-bone contact patches. Pressure builds, circulation drops, and the countdown to numbness and ache starts.
That's why the fix isn't "softer" — it's spreading the load. Distribute your weight across the whole contact area and add a layer that absorbs vibration and sharp hits, and the same firm seat that tortured you becomes a stable base under a comfortable one.
