Do the pressure math and it stops being a mystery. Sitting on a motorcycle, most of your upper-body weight lands on two sit bones — a contact patch of just a few square inches. That's a lot of pounds per square inch on soft tissue that was never meant to be a load-bearing surface for hours. Office chairs hide this with wide, contoured padding. A motorcycle seat, especially one whose foam has packed down over the seasons, does not.
Add the other ingredient: vibration. The engine and the road feed a constant buzz plus sharp hits into exactly the tissue that's already compressed. Compressed tissue gets less blood flow, blood-starved tissue gets sore, and by hour three you're shifting around the saddle every two minutes looking for a cheek that hasn't given up yet. Riders call it monkey butt; the mechanics are just pressure times time.
What helps: shift position regularly before it hurts rather than after, stand on the pegs for a few seconds every 15–20 minutes, take an hourly break, and wear riding pants without thick seams under the sit bones. But the real lever is the contact patch itself — spread the same weight across the whole seat instead of two points and the pounds-per-square-inch drop dramatically. That's the difference between surviving a long ride and enjoying it.
