Five seconds of it working
Your ears are the part of you that gives up first
Forty degrees is pleasant standing still and brutal at fifty miles an hour, and it is never your chest that tells you — it is the two thin flaps of skin on the sides of your head. A knit beanie does nothing about it. Wind goes straight through the stitches, your ears burn, and an hour later they ache. So you cut the ride short, or you pull over and jam your hands over them like a kid.
This is cut from first-layer cowhide, which is a solid wall to moving air, and it has leather ear flaps folded up inside the crown. Pull them down at the cold end of the ride and your ears are behind the same hide as the rest of your head. Fold them away and it is a plain leather flat cap you can wear into a bar.
One cap, two settings
What it does well, and what it does not
What it does well
- 100% first-layer cowhide — not PU, not bonded scraps
- Ear flaps fold down for the cold and hide inside the crown the rest of the time
- Blocks moving air in a way a knitted beanie simply cannot
- Lined with soft black fabric, so no bare leather on your forehead
- Breaks in to the shape of your head and takes a patina
- Three colors — brown, black and wine — and three sizes
What to know before you buy
- You have to measure. Sizes go by head circumference (55–60 cm) and leather does not give the way knit does. Between sizes, go up.
- It is not a helmet liner. This is a structured cap with a brim — it is for the ride to the bike, the fuel stop and everywhere off it, not for under a full-face.
- Leather needs a little care. No washing machine. If it gets soaked, dry it at room temperature, away from a radiator.
- Three sizes only. Under 55 cm or over 60 cm and this is not your hat.
A beanie keeps heat in. Leather keeps wind out.
Those are not the same job, and on a bike only one of them matters. Knit is a mesh — at speed the air goes through it and takes your body heat with it. Hide has nowhere for the air to go.
Two seconds either way
-
① Pull the flaps out
They live folded up inside the crown. Pull them down.
-
② Check the lining
Soft black fabric inside, so nothing rough on the skin.
-
③ Set it on your head
Flap over the ear, brim where you like it. That is it.

Five reviews so far, all five stars. Short, but they are real.
Very thick leather — not a cheap hat. Get one, you'll love it!
It's a comfortable fit with a great look.
Very nice hat, well constructed.
My boss loved his hat.
Great hat.
Cold ears are a choice. Make the other one.
First-layer cowhide, a soft lining, flaps that disappear when you do not want them, and three sizes so it actually fits.
How it compares
Against the two things already on the shelf by your door: the beanie you grab every morning, and the fur trapper you only wear when it is freezing.

Questions riders ask
How do I pick a size?
How do I pick a size?
Measure your head with a tape, just above the ears and across the forehead hairline. L is 55–56 cm, XL is 57–58 cm, XXL is 59–60 cm. Leather does not stretch like knit, so between sizes go up.
Is it really leather?
Is it really leather?
Yes — 100% first-layer cowhide, the top cut of the hide. It is noticeably thick and heavy in the hand, which is the first thing buyers mention.
How cold does it actually handle?
How cold does it actually handle?
It is a wind blocker first. On a bike that is most of the problem, and with the flaps down your ears stay behind the same hide as the rest of your head. In a hard freeze standing still, a wool scarf underneath still earns its place.
Can I wear it without the ear flaps?
Can I wear it without the ear flaps?
Yes. They fold up inside the crown and it wears as a plain leather flat cap, which is what most owners do from spring onwards.
How do I look after it?
How do I look after it?
Wipe it with a damp cloth. No washing machine. If it gets properly wet, let it dry at room temperature, away from a radiator or a heater.
Does it fit under a helmet?
Does it fit under a helmet?
No — it is a structured cap with a brim, not a liner. Think of it for the ride to the bike, the fuel stop, and every hour you are off it.
