More than most riders expect, because the tracker is the cheap part. Typical GPS tracker subscriptions run $10–$25 a month depending on brand and update speed. Straight math over five years:
- $10/month — $600
- $15/month — $900
- $20/month — $1,200
- $25/month — $1,500
And the sticker rarely stays the sticker. Add activation fees at some brands, mid-contract price increases, and “premium” tiers that gate the features you actually wanted — faster location refresh, longer history, geofence alerts. Hardwired systems can add a professional install bill up front, and canceling often means the hardware you paid for goes dead.
To be fair to subscriptions: you are paying for a real cellular data plan, and monitored services with staffed call centers can justify ongoing cost for exotic bikes or fleets. But for one motorcycle in your garage, $900 or more over five years is hard to defend now that pay-once trackers exist — connectivity bundled into the purchase, a free app, and a replaceable battery every 9–12 months as the only maintenance.
The five-year comparison ends up stark: subscription tracker, $600–$1,500 and still billing. Pay-once magnetic GPS tracker: one flat price, once.
